Nordic Skiing--The Ultimate Sport |
|||||
| Imagine gliding across a snow covered meadow ringed by majestic white mountains or charging down a steep snow laden hill. There is no doubt that Nordic (cross country) skiing turns the winter from a dark dreary time of year to the most invigorating, exciting time of the year. Further, the spectacular winter vistas excites the imagination causing one's spirits to soar. Anyone that can walk can cross country ski. This is a sport that is enjoyable for people of all ages and athletic ability. This is an inexpensive sport which is available to almost everyone located in a snowbelt. Unlike downhill skiing, the equipment is light and relatively inexpensive. There are no pricey lift tickets to purchase--you can simply ski anywhere where there is snow. In addition, there are many Nordic ski areas which offer groomed trails for a modest fee. In addition to being fun, this sport offers an excellent high energy consuming workout. With obesity being a national epidemic, this sport offers a fun way to consume calories and lose weight. Unlike most people, cross country skiers tend to lose weight during the winter months. People have been cross country or Nordic skiing for many years. On the island of Rödöy located off Norway's Artic coast is a rock carving depicting ski touring which is believed to be 4,500 years old. This is a sport that has endured the test of time. In this website, such subjects as an introduction to Nordic skiing, skiing technique, where to ski, ski equipment, history of skiing, racing, waxing, skate skiing, classic skiing, and many other topics are covered.
